What Does This Mean for Ethereum?"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><em>As Ethereum eyes its next big upgrade, we look at how \u201cthe merge\u201d to Ethereum 2.0 could impact the cryptocurrency\u2019s future<\/em> <em>and its price.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ethereum 2.0 (also known as ETH 2.0) is on the horizon, and will bring about some big upgrades, including changes to how the cryptocurrency is created, structured and used.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With the next phase of the roadmap scheduled to go live in the coming months, we\u2019ll explore how ETH 2.0 will affect Ethereum\u2019s future and when you can expect the upgrades to go live.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-ethereum-2-0\"><strong>What is Ethereum 2.0?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ethereum 2.0 is a major upgrade to the Ethereum blockchain which is intended to make the protocol greener, more scalable and more secure.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The upgrade is made up of a collection of changes that are being introduced in phases, the first of which was launched on December 1, 2020.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/xcoins.com\/en\/blog\/everything-you-must-know-about-ethereum-in-2022\/\">Ethereum was first launched in 2015<\/a> by Vitalik Buterin and Joe Lubin, and has consistently held its position as the second-largest cryptocurrency, behind <a href=\"https:\/\/xcoins.com\/en\/buy-crypto\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a>. It was created with the ambition of leveraging blockchain technology to host diverse, custom applications called decentralized applications, or \u201cdapps\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Developers can write programs called smart contracts and deploy them on Ethereum to transact with other participants on the network, without the need for one governing authority.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ethereum has undoubtedly been successful in its goal, however, ETH 2.0 will introduce long-awaited changes to improve its performance.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5491\" src=\"https:\/\/xcoins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/defi-3-1-1024x661.jpg\" alt=\"A smart phone on a desk with the words DEFI, Decentralized Finance on it\" width=\"1024\" height=\"661\" \/>\r\n<figcaption><em>Developers have used Ethereum\u2019s blockchain to create decentralized finance (DeFi) apps.<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-will-eth-2-0-impact-ethereum\"><strong>How will ETH 2.0 impact Ethereum?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Although its name suggests that it\u2019s an entirely new protocol, ETH 2.0 is in fact a new consensus layer on the existing blockchain \u2013 the Ethereum Foundation has largely retired the name \u201cETH 2.0\u201d in favour of calling the upgrade a consensus layer, however, the name has maintained its popularity in the Ethereum community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There are three main parts to the upgrade: the Beacon Chain, transitioning to proof-of-stake, and sharding. Each of these changes are major upgrades to the blockchain, so they\u2019re being introduced in separate phases; the first went live in December 2020, and the final phase is expected to roll out in 2023.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phase-0-the-beacon-chain\">Phase 0: The Beacon Chain<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This phase was a core upgrade to the Ethereum network that launched on December 1, 2020. The Beacon Chain introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/xcoins.com\/en\/blog\/proof-of-work-vs-proof-of-stake-the-pros-and-cons\/\">proof-of-stake<\/a>, staking is now live but will have limited functionality until The Merge in Phase 1.5 when it will replace mining.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Beacon Chain enabled Ethereum holders to become validator nodes by staking their ETH, a role which involves validating transitions and creating new blocks in its chain, to help with securing the network.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Beacon Chain required 16,384 validators to stake a minimum of 32 ETH each for it to launch; this milestone was achieved on November 24, 2020. Its primary role is to coordinate the validators on the network and ensure that shards remain secure.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/EtmSUMO2b6d-3jaX7JmGa_yM9Sirs0J_QlddlxVxKf4FfnfAbEE0OTBkmcCoQHSQGYr8gBrspApz6n5qh_LVqH4OOLRBFQAc2wvBoAtz_KsJGU1WY5vO7WbX9YLor0nHXYYH_rxKn7G4XrDKOQ\" alt=\"Ethereum\u2019s logo, represented as a fresh sprout on a tree, to represent sustainability and the cryptocurrency becoming environmentally-friendly.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/>\r\n<figcaption><em>The introduction of staking will make Ethereum more energy-efficient and sustainable.<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phase-1-sharding\">Phase 1: Sharding<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To support more transactions on Ethereum\u2019s blockchain, its infrastructure will be split into several pieces called shards.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These shards will operate as their own subset of the blockchain, and the Beacon Chain will randomly assign validators to each shard chain, allowing them to process transactions, create new blocks and store data. As well as increasing transaction efficiency, this will also mean that shard nodes will no longer need to store Ethereum\u2019s full history. Ethereum\u2019s blockchain will be split into 64 shard chains to start with, but they won\u2019t be fully functional until the final integration in Phase 2, which is expected to go live in 2023.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phase-1-5-the-merge\">Phase 1.5: The Merge<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Arguably the most anticipated upgrade to the network is \u201cThe Merge\u201d of Ethereum\u2019s mainnet with the Beacon Chain. In this phase, Ethereum\u2019s current chain will become a shard on its new blockchain, which will also mark the completion of the cryptocurrency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/xcoins.com\/en\/blog\/ethereum-staking-will-reduce-energy-use-by-more-than-99\/\">transition from proof-of-work to the more energy-efficient proof-of-stake<\/a> consensus mechanism.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/In6d1gJLy64P3kJccohYpKZZ9nYbJQG1cP13Nzjm5-2GKpkrUQ8SEhaymajGHPfmQRmAzS5_4XXG1D8n0O-f9t__hF17a1mGZ6zob2_G20oyUHgWnJ10tHkNp-fPJPLDG6oUs0KdDGNAY0FOZw\" alt=\"Ethereum Energy consumption infographic featuring a screw and the leaning tower of Pisa\" width=\"1200\" height=\"627\" \/>\r\n<figcaption><em>Ethereum\u2019s new staking model is expected to be roughly 7,000 times more energy-efficient than Bitcoin.<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phase-2-the-final-phase\">Phase 2: The final phase\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In this final phase, Ethereum 2.0 will officially become the main Ethereum network. However, as with most major launches, this date isn\u2019t set in stone. Since this is a significant test on the network, Buterin has emphasized that there may be delays which push its launch back to the fall of 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-will-eth-2-0-affect-ethereum-s-price\"><strong>How will ETH 2.0 affect Ethereum\u2019s price?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Recent history has shown that upgrades generally have a positive price impact \u2013 Ethereum\u2019s price rose by 6% in the 24 hours following its highly-anticipated <a href=\"https:\/\/xcoins.com\/en\/blog\/will-the-london-hard-fork-push-up-ethereums-price\/\">London Hard Fork<\/a> in August 2021.
