This should come as no surprise. Blockchain projects sit on the intersection of two fields that governments have always controlled pretty tightly: currency and investment. Governments like to control the former because it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/monetarypolicy.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can make<\/a>\u00a0an economy, the latter because it can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/money\/topic\/Great-Depression\/Causes-of-the-decline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">break one<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The globally-minded investor needs to understand this and the status of cryptocurrency anywhere he or she trades.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here is the\u00a0<a href=\"\/en\/blog\/is-bitcoin-really-legal-in-the-united-states\/\">legal status of cryptocurrency<\/a>\u00a0for each country that has staked out a position on the matter. It isn\u2019t always clear and is far from set in stone, but this should give you a place to start.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A couple of notes before we dive in:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>First, the term \u201clegal tender\u201d will appear periodically in this article. Legal tender is a currency which the government will accept for tax payments and, as the U.S. dollar says, is legally valid \u201cfor all debts public and private.\u201d Making something legal tender is exactly as big a deal as it seems because giving cryptocurrency that status means\u00a0<em>everyone<\/em>\u00a0has to take it, from the biggest bank to some guy selling peaches on the corner.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Second, unless noted otherwise, countries without specific regulations on the subject tax sales, profits, and losses from cryptocurrency like any other tradeable good.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Finally, if a nation does not appear on this list, it does not have any specific regulations or bans.
